Discussion Regarding City Council Compensation.
end
RECOMMENDED COUNCIL ACTION:
recommendation
Discuss City Council compensation and provide direction to staff regarding any potential amendments to Council compensation.
body
SUMMARY:
At the June 2, 2026, Council meeting a request was made under Future Agenda Items to have a discussion regarding Council compensation and by consensus the Council agreed to place a discussion item on a future agenda. Council compensation is intended to partially offset the time and expenses associated with serving in elected office. Councilmembers regularly attend City Council meetings, committee meetings, regional agency meetings, community events, training sessions, and occasionally conferences in support of their official duties.
PREVIOUS COUNCIL ACTION:
On March 3, 2026, the City Council adopted Ordinance No. 1093 for Chapter2; Article I; Section 2.7 amending Elected Officials Compensation.
On December 19, 2023, the City Council adopted Ordinance 1078, adding Chapter 2; Article I; Section 2.7 City Council Compensation.
DISCUSSION:
The City Council may periodically review compensation levels to ensure they remain appropriate, reflect current responsibilities, and remain consistent with statutory requirements.
In 2009 the City Council took action to reduce the $90 a month compensation to $1. That $1 amount remained in place for 15 years until the current compensation amount of $950 took effect in December of 2024. Current provisions regarding elected officials’ compensation allow for any elected official to waive any or all compensation.
CITY FISCAL IMPACT:
Council compensation is currently budgeted.
